And how the F*%K is my $4.99 can of Raid supposed to compete with that?

There are few things in life I loathe. Yes, loathe because HATE just isn't strong enough. Loathe to me just ooozes hate. Just say the word - LOOOOOATHE!

Okay, now that we've got that out of the way.

I LOATHE ants. Yes, ants. Those motherf*$kin' 6-legged, little, infesting, S*&t disturbing...

*inside voice: Okay, need to get the loathing under control. People will think you are nuts*

I was traumatized by an ant when I was about 4 years old. I won't share with you how, let's just say it was highly traumatic. This was only compounded by the fact that a friend had a carpenter ant problem in high school and I had to help her kill over 40 ants one afternoon in her kitchen when we got home from school. This was then reinforced when we read some short story and watched the movie Naked Jungle in English class in HS and that visually traumatized me even more.

It's the only critter I will go out of my way to kill and to actually take glee from killing. Yes, I'll admit it, I take GLEE from killing ants. If I see one on the sidewalk and I have to side step a few steps to step on it, you can damn well bet I'm going to put in the effort. Ironically enough, friends and fellow home owners who know my aversion to ants gave me ant traps for a house warming present. Yes, that's how much I LOATHE them.

This past summer, I went to TOWN on the ants in my backyard and those were only those "cute" little microscopic ones that aren't really a problem but just part of the natural order of a backyard. If only you could have heard my maniacal laugh to "die you little f*%kers, DIE!!!!" as I poured on the ant killer that was only supposed to be used in sparing drops.

However, this puts me at fundamental odds with my geeky, scientifically inquisitive mind and I've actually considered that I should give an ant farm to my nephews as a present. What?!? You think I'm going to willingly put ants in my house? Screw that. I just wanna see the tunnels for about 30 seconds and then walk away before the rage swells up inside me and I smash the farm with my bare hands and then make a pulpy mess of dismembered heads and 6-legged bodies. (BTW, I think sea monkeys would probably be better, non? Probably wouldn't scar the kids as much.)

ANYWAYS, I came across this video on Geekologie today. It freaked me out more than any middle aged man after watching Fatal Attraction back in the 80's. So I thought I would share as this little tidbit about me is something not everyone knows and well, considering I turn into a platinum blonde-haired, crazy-eyed Hulkess, you should kinda be forewarned so that you're not taken aback over an otherwise nice lunch outside one sunny summer afternoon.

(Yes, I know I have issues - but the first step is admitting it. And buying raid, or 10 tonnes of cement as it is.)

BTW, check out the sole survivor at 2:20. Betcha know what he's thinking, don't you?

"Kill my family, ruin my home, cut off my legs, segment my body. Doesn't matter...I'll be back."

Epilogue: Sorry for all the cussin' in this post. When it comes to those Motherf^*kin', crawl all over you at picnics, infest your home, little...okay, I can't help myself. I loose all control and the angry trucker in me comes out. I'm sure it makes my redneck daddy real proud.

I need a new phone

My old school phone sucks. My cell phone plan is even worse because I'm finding that more and more I'm getting carpal thumb-el syndrome from using the keypad to text to get charged through the nose for "LOL c u soon". If only I had come across this sooner my calloused thumbs wouldn't have been the reason I lost so many hand model jobs in the past. *sigh* If only...

And then, while on Geekologie over lunch, I found the letters NSFW all over a page with links. I have NO idea what that means so I Googled it (*inside voice: as if Googled is coming up as a spelling mistake in Blogger - sheesh!*) to discover it means Not Safe For Work. I also found this KB list of text message acronyms.

So, Mexican Princess, who once upon a time needed to be schooled in ROTFLMFAO, here's the perfect link for you:

The largest list of text message shorthand and internet acronyms found on the web.

I plan on using these in the future in my posts but don't worry, I'll hyperlink them when I do. I must admit, there are a few I'm already using that I didn't even know I had used like SIL.

Awesome.

*Note to the perverts who read my blog - the word model is correctly placed in the first paragraph above. Get your minds outta the gutter.*

2009 is the year

A while back I pondered the things I should do before dying. What I was thinking of were the big things, you know, stuff that would be pricey to accomplish or require some kind of long term planning. But there are tons of things in my daily life that I should know how to do or wouldn't take much to learn with the right volunteer teachers (ahem).

So instead of doing a list of resolutions for 2009, I've come up with a list of goals. Easier to accomplish and if I get delayed in doing them, well, at least I've got 12 months to recover my dignity and tick them off the list. I'll update the list as I check things off or add things and if there are things you think I should know how to do/should accomplish because you either 1) can't believe I don't do that or 2) just think everyone should do it/experience it once, feel free to leave a comment. So here goes (in no particular order):

1) Learn how to change a light fixture, wall socket and light switch
2) learn to BBQ (this will start with learning to turn the BBQ on and hooking up the propane)
3) learn to kayak (I always said this was my sport of my 30's and well, I'm 20-10 now so no excuses!)
4) learn how to paint (like a room)
5) go for my first leg waxing (followed immediately by #22)
6) learn to drive standard
7) learn to put air in my car/bike tires
8) open a champagne bottle (I don't think I'll mind practicing this one!)
9) learn ambidextrous shoveling
10) learn to write and use a mouse with my left hand (I've started practicing fine motor control already with putting on my mascara with my left hand - you laugh, let's see you take your eyes in your hands and try it!)
11) learn to start a fire
12) learn to read a compass
13) learn to parallel park (again) and reverse into a spot (not that I can't do those, I just choose not to because I can't do it very well and I should be able to)
14) learn to change a tire
15) learn CPR and the Heimlich maneuver
16) learn to use my (new) digital camera (I have a lesson booked on February 7th to kick start this one)
17) learn to pump gas at an old school gas pump
18) try speed dating (this one is PURE entertainment value and sure to be an entertaining blog entry)
19) send a drink over to someone's table
20) find a new hobby
21) sing at a karakoe bar (oh yeah, there will be some serious practicing of #8 before this one happens)
22) learn how to make 10 popular mixed drinks
23) purchase a martini shaker and learn to use it
24) learn to sew (basic stuff - curtains, pillow cases, hem pants, etc.
25) try 12 new wines
26) stock my wine cabinet (12 bottles down, 36 to go!)

A lot of the things on this list are also found in a great book that Research Chick passed on to me before my big 20-10 about the 30 things everyone should know how to do before turning 30. Some were already on my list but some were also ones that I didn't even know I needed to know. Needless to say, thanks to her.

So, if there are any that you want to make it your personal mission for 2009 to teach me how to do or experience with me for the first time (I can just imagine the lineups starting for #8 and #21 together), sign up now. I'll take orders now through February when I get started on this list once I come back from my Mexicoma.

This is why I should be on YouTube more

Oh My GOD! HILARIOUS! Profane, but HILARIOUS.

A big shout out to B over at Flacklife for sharing. I was going to just email this out but it's too funny - it needs to be posted everywhere.

Once again, HILARIOUS!

There are certain phrases no one ever wants to hear

These include, but are not limited to...

"You have (insert any STD, communicable disease, terminal disease, embarrassing odour problem, etc.)"

"I slept with (insert any person who is not you or the other person you're in the relationship with)"

"(insert any name of person, beloved pet or favourite celebrity) is dead"

And my personal favourite from today...

"It'll cost more to fix (insert any inanimate object) than to just buy a new one"

On my list of things to do before JJ and I leave for our Mexicoma to visit the Mexican Princess, I had to get the memory card on the camera fixed. The camera has more features and options on it than I'll ever know what to do with but it was le ex's and I got it in the divorce so meh, I still came out on top even if I have no clue how to use it. Anyways, I wanted to have lots of memory to take photos and for some reason the 1 GB card was giving a card error message when inserted.

Before I went to Black's, I wanted to make sure that it was still doing that. I discovered I had a lot of photos still on the little memory card that needed to be erased. It was then that I remembered I'd had this black spot that showed up in most of my Washington photos (when I went in APRIL!!!) and I'd not used nor had the camera fixed since coming back. So I thought to myself, okay, I'll kill two birds with one stone.

And off to Black's I went. Once there, the guy said, "oh, well, you just need to format the card". 30 seconds later, presto! My memory card works. 30 seconds after that, he informs me that they'd have to take the camera apart to see what the problem is because it's something on the lense as the pictures when downloaded still have this mystery spot. And that's gonna cost me a lot and it'll be a pain to even find a place that does camera repairs. Why? Because apparently it's cheaper to just replace cameras than to get them fixed.

To which this poor guy got from me "Seriously?!?! What a waste!! You mean it's cheaper to just get a whole new camera and throw this one out?"

Black's guy's response: "yup"

My response (to which I KNOW he thought I was a typical Glebe-ite nutjob): "Great, why don't we really just hammer that nail in the environment's coffin with adding another camera to the landfills."

So I bought a new digital camera (I know, so hypocritical after my rant but I want good photos from Mexico - MP's photos thus far have been beautiful) that's actually better than my other one and believe it or not, was a heck of a lot cheaper (original price) and soooo much easier to use, not to mention compact. I even understand the light settings. I'm going to spend the next 4 days being a shutter bug so I can instinctively find the right setting for the light I'm in.

You know what this also means? It's small enough for me to carry with me ALL THE TIME. Oh yeah, them be some pics acomin' your way via a blog. No more will I be lamenting about wishin' I'd been able to take a pic to post so you'd have the true visual effect of my rantings. There is one word for this that I know you're thinking....

Awesome.

You might wanna turn off your mic

Admit it, we all have our guilty pleasures.

Mine are fast food breakfasts. Like a sausage, egg mcmuffin from McDonald's. Or a sausage breakfast sandwich from Tim Horton's. And the hashbrowns....mmmmm, the hashbrowns.

So, as I do on some weekends (not every weekend, that would be gross), I once again found myself in the drive through at Tim Horton's. One thing I've come to discover is that the hashbrowns at Tim Horton's can't ever compare to those at McDonald's which is fine because the Tim Horton's around the corner from my house shares a parking lot with a McDonald's.

So after I got my coffee and breakfast sandwich at TH, I went to the drive through at Mickey D's.

MD Employee: Welcome to (*my inside voice: the slowest*) McDonald's. Can I take your order?

Me: Hi, can I get a hashbrown, please?

MDE: *long pause* Is that everything? (in a WTF? tone)

Me: Yes, thank you. (and yes, I do use "please" and "thank you" with every drive through order - momma raised me right)

Long pause. *inside voice: is he going to tell me the price and to drive through or should I just drive through*

MDE: $1.04 please drive through. *pause* Just a hashbrown. I know. Who orders just a hashbrown?

Yeah, um dude, you might wanna turn your mic off before you pass judgement on the customers in the drive through.

And in true slowest McDonald's in the world fashion, it took them long enough to get me my hashbrown that I had enough time to put my change away, roll up my window and open my coffee from Tim Horton's before they came to the window with JUST my hashbrown.

North Dakota is where it's NOT at

I came across this really neat map of the proliferation of Walmart in America today on Geekologie. It appealed to my "small pox is gonna make a comeback" theory (also why I read up on plagues and viruses routinely) as it looks like Walmart is a plague on America - which it is as any store that encourages people to travel around in Winnebago's should be banned off the face of the Earth even if the Mexican Princess (not-so-secretly) lusts after owning one. A Winnebago, not a Walmart, that is.

BTW, that's some pretty basic but still neat jizz GIS technology in action.

Okay - so my embed feature won't work with Shockwave or something. Whatever. You're going to have to click to watch.

Wanna join a gang?

If you read my blog regularly enough, the fact that I have a visual memory will not come as a surprise to you. I use it routinely to run a household or to perfect my stalking but where it also comes in as a curse is when I lose something.

Because I have an inane talent of being able to tell you the exact layout of every room in my house when I last saw it and all its contents (I know, you're dying to turn this into some kinda party trick, aren't you?) , it also literally drives me up a wall when I "lose" something.

The last thing I lost was a pair of onyx stud earrings. How, I don't know because, well, I'm a jewelery hound so the idea of losing a pair of my precious ear baubles is just beyond my comprehension (and yours I'm sure). Before that, well, I honestly do not remember losing anything since probably my childhood.

Hold your horses - there's a reason I'm rambling on in this background monologue.

Recently, I went out and bought myself two new sets of winter accessories. Grey and chocolate brown sets of a scarf, toque and gloves in fleece. I've been the queen of mismatch/ill fitting/falling apart items for a few winters now so I finally decided to suck it up and buy a set - for $8 glorious dollars each. Gotta love Joe.

And then I lost the toque that belongs to the grey set. My house is by far not at all messy (I think it's become MORE neurotically tidy since le ex left) but I have searched it high and low looking for that cursed toque for HOURS. I'm not kidding, I looked for hours because I DON'T lose things. I then searched my car and then comforted myself with the thought that it HAD to be at work. But to no avail. I even did the unthinkable and made a desperate plea to my SIL to keep an eye out for it which for my ego was like an alcoholic admitting they have a problem. While she probably didn't see it as that, my ego certainly felt it as that.

Today I wore an unmatching toque to the scarf and gloves to work. I had resolved myself that it's gone. "Stop crying over spilt milk a lost toque, L," I said to myself, "time to accept that it's gone." BTW, have I mentioned just how cute I was in that toque? Especially with the contrasting black pea coat and grey with the (platinum) blond hair?

I then I got a message left by my SIL on my phone saying that my brother thanked her yesterday for his new toque that he's absolutely loving.

IT'S MY F*%&ING TOQUE!

So, if you see status updates, wall posts, or whatever else I can come up with that mention my toque, I'm trying to shame my brother into giving it back to me.

So who's in to form a Greenboro gang to go to the Tweed gang's turf and start a rumble. Winner gets the toque. Or at the very least leaves behind a present for them. And yes, that is a threat, dear brother.

You have two choices

Let me in or hit me.

That's my new motto when it comes to navigating the roads during the transit strike. We have to share and be nice and courteous. And if I've got my ticky-ticky on, I'm being polite and letting you know that I'm coming in so let me because, and I repeat, you have two choices - choose wisely because you know I'm going to go lose it if you don't. ;o)

That gives you an idea of my drive in this morning to a conversation with a maritimer about driving in Ottawa. She doesn't drive on any of the 400 series highways. She plans her routes to places in order to never have to turn left.

But la pièce de la résistance?

She plans her entire route to never have to change lanes.

So if you're ever driving in Ottawa and can't figure out why the right lane is going faster than the left lane, it's because she has made a planning error and has to turn left further along in her drive and has decided to hang out in the left lane.

There are no words.

I'm in love

It's 2009 and there's no better way to start off a new year than realizing you're in love. After almost two years of him being right under my nose the whole time, I've finally come to appreciate him for what he is.

He has been there to comfort me by listening and never saying a judgmental or harsh word over everything that's "gone wrong" in my life over the past year and has been there to share in my triumphs when they've finally come. He's made me feel warm and secure and always at peace. Granted, he's made me mad and curse under my breath and wish we'd never crossed paths, but I've also worried about him being alone and self-destructing in some unimagineable way when I'm away from him. Gladly, he's always been there to welcome me back when I needed him. He's the first one I want to see when I get up and the last one I want to see before I go to sleep at night. I routinely count him in my things to be grateful for and consider myself lucky to have him in my life. And now that I've finally realized and accepted how I feel about him, I can reciprocate everything he's done for me with the love and attention he deserves and I can't wait to spend time with him and my family and friends over many a BBQ this summer (What? I'm excited I got a new BBQ for Christmas.) Oh, the good times that are ahead of us...

But coming back down off of cloud nine, it wasn't until I was in Home Depot today that I realized how I felt. I took a wrong turn on my way to buy myself a hack saw (because no self-respectin' lady shouldn't own a hack saw and yes, I know you're once again impressed with my DIY goddess knowledge) when I came across something that I knew would be perfect for him. It just screamed him and somehow screamed me too...like we're one - like we're meant to be together and while I know I shouldn't have, I spent the $23 and bought it and can't wait to give it to him.

I bought new silver, not gold, set of house numbers and a door knocker without my name and le ex's on it.

(Pssst...this is where you stop freaking out that there's some mystery man in my life that I've somehow neglected to tell you about and realize I'm in love with my house.)
