I routinely read a blog called 'Living Flirtatiously'. It provides my sentimental heart with the right doses of butterfly commentary mixed with cynical dating realities to make me feel like I'm not alone in blundering my way through the dating world. Today's post by Maura was on poems for any stage of a romantic relationship. Of course I read them but one of the last ones that I read was the one by E.E. Cummings called I like my body when it is with your.
i like my body when it is with your
body. It is so quite new a thing.
Muscles better and nerves more.
i like your body. i like what it does,
i like its hows. i like to feel the spine
of your body and its bones, and the trembling
-firm-smooth ness and which i will
again and again and again
kiss, i like kissing this and that of you,
i like, slowly stroking the, shocking fuzz
of your electric fur, and what-is-it comes
over parting flesh… And eyes big love-crumbs,
and possibly i like the thrill
of under me you so quite new
Um, it's kinda randy, non? I have to admit that just over 12 years ago I sat in a crowded auditorium writing my last English lit essay for a final exam in my mandatory-for-my-BA 1st year English lit class and I sat for a minute to gather my thoughts when I realized that this would be the last English exam I would ever have to right. I could have SUNG I felt so ELATED at the idea that I would never have to use the words protagonist, antagonist, foreshadowing, anticlimax or narrative again - note I didn't say 'climax' ;o) . Probably one of the reasons why I hate really stuffy book clubs. I like to enjoy the written word on a purely superficial level...is that so wrong of me?
Anyways, I decided to read these poems as I've recently found myself on 2 and soon to be 3 dates with a master's grad of English lit. I can't admit to never having read E.E. Cummings, can I? Well now I can...if only that it's something rather randy that I've read...I wonder if that would scandalize the English lit major....
In an effort to save those I care about from biblical-length emails, and not turn into the crazy lady who talks to her cats, I've put my inner rants and ponderings into a blog in a narcissistic need to fill the cosmic void.

Something for the 'to see list'
My long ago colleague and favourite entrepreneur MChen has started a new project with her sister, Serena, to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. They do this as their father, for whom I heard many, many, many beyond belief entertaining stories about while M and I worked together (plus, M's a great story teller which only enhances the Papa Chen stories) was diagnosed with cancer.
To support him and raise money, the lassies are doing what they do best...being creative. They've started the D.A.D project. I'll let you go to the site and read up on it. I've bought shirts of M's and drawings of Serena's because the ladies are wickedly talented. So they're working on very reasonably priced prints of their daily drawings for sale.
I quite liked the one from M today about sloths...I love sloths.

But better yet, there was this video:
LOVE IT. Especially the guy at 1:30. Reminds me of Zoot and Animal combined....you know, from the muppets. But really, have you ever seen a cuter animal scratching its ass?

Walk with me
I had the strangest thing happened to me last week.
I was out walking somewhere and could sense that someone was coming up on my rear to overtake me on the sidewalk. I did what was nice, move over so they could. But instead of doing it, they fell in step with me and walked with me for a good 20 paces or so.
When I realized this was the case, not that I could really hear them (I was listening to my 'slit my wrists' playlist on my iPod) but more I could sense them there, I turned to see if I knew the person. He turned and looked back at me, we were both a little startled to see someone we didn't know, exchanged silent smiles (he too was on his iPod), and he quickly picked up his pace and carried on.
The strange thing about it was, it was nice to just walk with someone without saying something. I know it sounds weird but it was nice to share a moment with someone you didn't know. Kinda one of those reaching out to humanity kinda moments. You know, like when you see momma ducks and baby ducks out together (I love ducks) and you look up to see someone else watching them and you share a 'wasn't that cute?' smile with each other. It was kinda like that.
Anyways...moving on.

My business is to create
I've been feeling a little stressed and overwhelmed lately and well, just general malaise and restlessness as well. So I did last night what I do when I need to find my happy place: I did laundry and cooked.
I'm not very good with exact cooking. I'm more of a sauce/random spicing/throw it all together and see what happens kinda cook. Baking and I do not get along. At. All. But turn me loose to make a sauce or a soup and I'm all good.
It had been nagging at me that I had 3 containers of turkey leftovers and bones that needed to go into a soup. So I started with the lobster pot I have last night and got cooking. 3 hours later, I was finally done and had 41 cups (my new Tupperware that I bought for the occasion had volume measurements on it) of more of a turkey stew than soup. One of these days I'll learn to cook for less of an army and to stop adding in more of this and a little more of that.
As a result, last night was the first night in weeks I've slept through the night. No anxiety about work, no other 'what's the meaning of life and where am I headed' thoughts, no nothing. I felt like a gal without a care in the world this am. It never ceases to amaze me how you can find release in some of the smaller mundane things in life.

This needs to be in a movie
I'd been exposed to Moby on an off-chance basis up until getting my iPod and then JJ & Co. gave me 4 albums worth to begin my musical education. I heard this song for the first time tonight. Put it on. Have a listen. Do other things and just think...
Could you see this with some crazy triumphant part of a movie? With great scenery? Perhaps wilderness? With a big panning shot of someone standing all alone? Or two lovers or two family members being reunited? Or maybe someone driving carefree with the roof down on a windy, sunny, autumn day with the leaves all colourful and blowing in the wind?
Something about this song moved me tonight. Thought I'd share. Because life's all about these little moments, isn't it?
(To listen: click on the title of my blog. You may be brought to a new page for just this post. Click on it again. Apparently, that will start a download of the song for you from box.net. I hope this isn't illegal sharing or something 'cause my intention was to have this embedded somehow. I blame Blogger for giving neophytes bad instructions. If only I was a bigger nerd.)
P.S. What's neat about box. net is that it is really a file sharing site so that it acts like a virtual network. Whenever one of you downloads the song, it sends me a notification. So I can see how many of you are actually going to listen to it AND who's not working mid-day. ;o) Don't get me wrong, I love that you read my ramblings so mum's the word, mmmkay?

Kids say the darndest things
I'm at the fam's tonight baby-sittin' the 'phews. We watched Mighty Machines and specifically, the 'Making Waves' edition which looked at all kinds of boats. When the container ship came open, the blonde twin called for me to come see from the kitchen where I was putting dinner in the oven. The conversation went something like this:
BT: Aunt L, see, look at all those trailers and the cranes lifting them off. There's 1,2,3,4 cranes.
AL: Wow, that's a lot.
BT: Yeah, you know what's in those containers?
AL: No, what?
BT: TVs.
AL: TVs?
BT: Yeah.
(Inside voice: hmmm, okay, I can work with this - because that's how I roll)
AL: You know what else is in those containers?
BT: What?
AL: Couches.
BT: Yeah?
AL: Yup. And chairs. And...(inside voice: shit, as if there's nothing else in this living room that works for this example)
BT: (excitedly) And TOYS?!?!?
AL: Yup. Toys, too.
BT: And liquor?
AL: WHAT?!?!
BT: Liquor.
AL: Liquor?!? (inside voice: what the FUCK has my brother been teaching you? And everyone worries about ME being the bad influence)
BT: (insert 'wtf is wrong with you - don't you understand English?' tone) Yeah.
AL: Yup (inside voice: just roll with it. Don't make a big deal, just let it go and find out what the hell your brother has been teaching them.)
Upon their arrival home, my brother reminded me that the new Trailer Park Boys movie (Countdown to Liquor) is now out on DVD which triggers me to remember to tell them about this exchange in a 'speaking of liquor' kinda way. Big Bro then ponders out loud where they would have picked that word up considering he hardly uses it. After a few seconds, he realizes that he mentioned the name of the movie with the kids in the van last night. And apparently, the kids see the containers on the ship as being the same kinda TRAILERS that are on the back of semis. I guess of the movie title those words, trailer and liquor, were the only ones that were understood and have now been inexplicably linked in someone's mind.
Awesome.

The Buried Life
It was a rough day at work. I almost lost my shit. I'm tired. I'm stressed and I'm sick of seemingly being the only one doing all the work or even stopping to think of how to get all the work done as a team, not just the stuff that is in (or as it may be, not in) my job description.
I need a holiday.
But that won't happen for a while. So instead, it's time to regroup. And when I need to do that, it's time to get a coffee and write. So here I sit in Sbucks collecting my wits about me and hoping for the best.
There is one thing that has put life into perspective a bit today. I had seen commercials a while back for The Buried Life, a show on MTV about 4 dudes aged early 20ish that travel around in a big purple bus doing the 100 things they want to do before they die. Tonight I watched the first two episodes. And it struck a cord in me for some reason. Watch them. I think they're only about a half hour each and they're really entertaining.
Maybe it's the fact that I'm starting to question, after everything that's been happening at work lately, just what is and isn't important, ya know? I feel like everything seems to be in limbo. The pseudo 5 year plan is long done and I'm not sure what's next. But I know this isn't it. I just haven't figured out what is.
In the mean time, I need to go back to dodgeball. I need to kick some ass.

I lied
A while back I put into my FB status update, much to all of your shock, that I was sick and tired of hearing Xmas music. Well, at least until March.
I lied.
But only because I saw this tonight:
Seriously, when I saw the car at 29 seconds in I actually had a little gasp of pleasure out loud with an 'awwww'. God, I'm a sucker for Xmas. But like you all didn't already know that. Dammit, I love you Google. I love you and your viral marketing campaigns. You warm my heart. You make my soul sing.
Oh, and here's another new Search Story. Seems like it's a much better out of office than I had earlier this month.
I lied.

Oh yeah?!?!?!
I'm really lucky. My SIL and I get along quite well and we have a lot of similar personality traits. I have to wonder if that's part of the reason that my brother married her ;o) But in all seriousness, she's one of my best friends. And really, who can say that about their inlaws, hmm?
So tonight she left me a phone message asking me to call her because she had a 'I told you so moment' that she wanted to tell me about. When I did call back, she said 'what's up?' so I told her 'you had a 'I told you so' moment for me?' She proceeded to tell me all about her day at work and one such moment she had throughout the course of her day.
At that point in time when you know the story is supposed to end and you, as the listener are supposed to say something to confirm that 'I told you so' self-righteousness point of the story, instead, I said...
(and I quote)
'I've just lost two minutes of my life that I will NEVER get back'
(polishing nails on shirt) Yup, well played if I do say so myself.
I love you SIL xoxoxo

I'm now a narcissist. In red.
Is it totally narcissistic that I'm really liking the photos of me that have been taken lately? I never really thought of myself as photogenic but lately, a lot of the pics that have come up seem to have been indicating otherwise.
To get deep about it, I think it's the 'really-happy-with-life, genuine smile' that I seem to got goin' on. I've also noticed I belly laugh more. I am a lot less angry about things. Sure I have my short-fused moments (thanks Dad, for passing on that personality trait) still but fundamentally, I'm pretty frickin' happy. And I 'stop and smell the roses' and appreciate life more too. Poor Haileybird was the victim of that today (btw, welcome to the blog, Haileybird!) when she said that she hated the fact that it was a grey dreary day out again today to which I responded along the lines of 'yes but it's winter and it's supposed to be like that and without grey days, then we wouldn't appreciate the sunny ones.' Gback retorted with one of my favourite lines: 'I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.' And is it because I'm Canadian that I feel weird saying that I think I've got it good and I'm happy with my lot in life? Like I'm gloating or something? Whatever. I don't care.
I've also noticed that I have a lot more red clothing. Like I mean a LOT more. I had one pair of red fleece pants and one red long sleeved t and somehow, in the last two years, I seem to have a lot more colour in my life - especially red. Like enough that I can do a full load of clothing of just REDS. Again, I chalk it up to the changes I've seen in life these last two years. Those are my deep thoughts. And these are my fav pics of me of the last little while. I'd say 'enjoy' but that feels REALLY narcissistic.

The Wind Cries Mary
You know what's awesome about my new iPod and the 4527 songs on my iTunes (thank you, JJ & Co.)?
Every day I come across a song that has some sort of little bit o' heaven for me.
Today it was a little Jimi. I spent a really nice, romantic (yes, at 16) evening sitting in the enclosed porch of my high school sweetheart's sauna during a thunder and a lightening storm listening to this over and over again. I can't hear this song without my heart longing for him just a touch. It's a nice reminder of how good my life has been.

Just think about it
Okay, I'm in the middle of a 'holy shit' existential moment, Bat Man and thought the best way for me to process this moment would be to blog it out.
Just blog it out. Let it go...write it down.
Okay.
So, I just finished watching The Day the Earth Stood Still and man, that is some BAD cinema. No, I can't even call it cinema. That's a bad waste of moolah on behalf of Twentieth Century Fox, that's for DAMN sure. Maybe it's that Keanu Reeves hasn't been good in anything since...well, ever or the fact that that main chick, whose name I can't remember and should only be good for getting red eyes because she's not good enough as an actress to actually faux cry and is better left to no lines and just having a slightly open-mouthed awed expression all the time or the fact that Jaden Smith is really only cute in movies with his father and then, let's be honest, we really only focus on him as being cute because his fine father made him. Maybe.
Or maybe it's a movie that kinda shook me to the core re. our dependence on technology and what we're doing to this planet. But it didn't hit me until minutes later when I was looking through some bookmarks and realizing I could just delete the pages I had used in planning NYC because I could 'always Google them again'. Google them again. And then I wondered 'how the hell DID everyone plan trips before the Internet'?
And then I went into an existential tailspin.
But it's okay. I snapped out of it. As soon as I started writing this post which included Will Smith.
Mmmm. Mmmmm. Mmmmmmmmmmmm. Will Smith.
Anyways, moving on to surf the net ;o)

Dear Jet Blue...I love you
Yeah, I know. Not typical that you see me LOVING a company but frickin' frack, these gents run a good business.
The situation went something like this. We flew from Syracuse to NYC (JFK) and then back. While on our trip back, we were delayed by almost 2 hours because the aircraft coming in to take us to Syracuse was delayed. And THEN there was a backlog of about 10-15 other planes on the tarmac waiting to take off. Egads. But we didn't really mind. After all, we've all travelled with Air Canada before and we know what kinda fiasco that can be. And we're Canadians - we get that Ma Nature can be a spiteful bitch. And when those two don't suffice, we also had a bootlegged copy of New Moon from Canal Street that we were watching in the airport. So we really didn't care.
But then CBeau got this from Jet Blue....
Subject: Compensation for your JetBlue Flight
To: Cbeau@gmail.com
I know it's $25 but hot damn, have you ever heard of any Canadian airlines (*ahem* Air Canada) doing something like this? Sure they gave me compensation for being BOOTED OFF THEIR FLIGHT FOR WHICH I HAD A TICKET 4 MONTHS IN ADVANCE but this was a delay...these things happen.
So I was impressed. And what do I do when I'm impressed - I let someone know. So I got on the Jet Blue website and fired this little note off to them.
Dear Jet Blue,
Not being an American citizen, flying with your airline was a first to me on my recent trip to New York City.
Two friends and I decided to drive the 3 hours to Syracuse and then fly in to JFK as it would cut down travel and headache time if weather was inclement. Being Canadians, we understand this happens often.
Upon our return, the aircraft taking us from JFK to Syracuse was delayed and we experienced a further delay on the tarmac waiting to take off. In total, we were probably 1.3-2 hours behind schedule. However, being Canadians and having travelled with our own Canadian airlines frequently, we understand that this can be par for the course, especially during the holiday season.
What has bowled me over and caused me to write you a complimentary note with two thumbs up is the fact that you sent us a voucher for $25 as a way to compensate us for this inconvenience - one that is by far nowhere near what we've experienced with other (Canadian) airlines.
Given our flight was enjoyable beyond that with easy check in and luggage pick ups upon arrival at our two destinations, you can be guaranteed that I will now consider driving to the nearest airport serviced by Jet Blue and fly within the US from that location.
Thank you for the great service and appreciation for my time when the flight was delayed.
Best regards,

p.s. On a completely unrelated note, I loved looking at your aircraft in the airports - fabulous and unique paint jobs.
Now, if you've never seen a Jet Blue aircraft, they're all different. Okay, they probably have like 10 designs but it felt like every one was different. See what I mean? I love, love, LOVE the argyle. Ahhh...argyle... And polka dots? CRACK. ME. UP.

Best regards,
Lynn

There are few things
I'm not sure if I was never really one to get swept off my feet at grand gestures of presents or whatnot or if that's a new position since becoming an adult. Perhaps it's tied to the fact that we didn't have a lot of money growing up as kids and while I never really felt any hardship, I don't feel I missed out on anything because of some of the memories I have growing up. While money was tight, time spent as a family or with my brother wasn't and well, perhaps that's why I could care less what name my heel is walking over each day or the brand of car I drive (although don't get me started on Fords).
So when I do actually see something I like and want, I have very little impulse control not to buy it but I figure that as it happens less often than most, I can be forgiven.
When I moved into my house, my first Christmas was rounding the bend at this time of year. Amazing that I've been here now for almost two and a half years and amazing more than I've been here longer on my own (sans the med student) than I was with le ex. But I digress...it was at this time that the neighbour at the other 'corner' of our street put up star lights that hung as a curtain in their dining room window. Because they were on the corner where the two streets intersected, every time I went north on my street, I'd see the lights. I was enchanted.
I'm not sure what it is about stars and twinkle lights. I've wanted nothing more than to have twinkle lights in my back yard and then to see stars I could have in my house, well, I was sold. I remember begging le ex to try and find them, convinced they were an Ikea product, and to get them when we did one day stumble upon them. But he saw them as unsightly and expensive. I resigned myself to trying to think that they were tacky so I wouldn't want them as much.
Fast forward almost two years and not wanting to let the Ikea gods get the better of me, I was in the Toronto Ikea on a mission when I came across them once more. This time, without hesitation, I bought them. And as my street seems to be getting more and more like the Griswalds every year (WTF? Even *I*, lover of all things Christmas, have a limit and some neighbours reached it several strings of lights ago), I will turn on my simple lights and bask in the oddly greeny-cream glow.

How to be cheeky and get your point across
So, I promised myself I wouldn't blog about this until AFTER my birthday and seeing as how it's now 12:06, it's fair game.
I found out this weekend, courtesy of the smallest grapevine in the world (aka Ottawa), that le ex is engaged.
My first reaction was....
nothing.
Yes, nothing. I didn't feel anything. No sadness, no remorse, no jealousy. Nothing. This, to me, is truly a sign that I'm over him. However, this chased an exceptionally bad date on Saturday night (more WHMPC to follow) so there was a little 'oh, 'eff me. I can't even get a good date and he's already getting remarried?' but then I realized that it's a good thing I'm out dating and not settling. Not saying that he is or anything but you know, I'm sure my time will come.
Then about two hours later, it hit me.
What name is this new wife going to have? Her own? Zrudlo (which as far as I know he's still not using)? Or....ALBERTA?!?!?!?!?
While so many things were not great about the divorce, the only thing that ever really fired me up was the fact that he refused to change his name back because apparently 'he's worked hard to build his *ahem* professionalretail store manager reputation on it'. I hope, truly hope, someone is the voice of reason and perhaps tries to talk him out of the merits of keeping my name given this new development.
But if not, I think the followingevilly crafted and so wish I was less of a lady to actually have the cojones to send it email would to him may get the point across:
Subject: Congratulations
Dear le ex (I'd actually use his name but still like to maintain some anonymity on this blog),
I know it's been quite some time since we last spoke and I hope all is well with you. I just wanted to send you a quick congratulatory note on your upcoming nuptials. While I have yet to meet the lucky lady, I can't wait to have her join the Alberta family and am sure she will carry our name proudly. In fact, I don't think we even have anyone of her name within the family so she may be the first of that name as well - unfortunately not something you too can attest to as the first SA was actually born into our family, not married into it.
Anyways, congratulations and again, I look forward to welcoming her to the family!

Yeah, I know...I shouldn't. And I won't. But it would feel soooo good.

WHMPC - The Hopeless Romantic
So, I'm at home sick with a nasty cold. I keep checking my temperature for a fever and I think the thermometer is lying. Regardless, the thought of getting up and showering and getting dressed even was too much, forget walking across the parking lot to my office.
So here I sit. Sick. Lonely. And weepy. Because that's how I am when I'm sick. I'm a cry-y, weepy, needy, love-wanting sap. And what better thing to do when you can't sleep any more and are waiting for the soup to cook? Blog! ;o)
Before I post some more WHMPC because, even though I swore off men recently, I've been out dating still and have to catch you all up on the trials and tribulations, I need to post this.
This speaks to the hopeless romantic in me, not a guy who's earned that as his nickname. And as I'm sure that there will be times where I will definitely waste some hair and makeup products as a result of that side of my personality, this morning, with kleenex in hand, it made me feel 10 times better than any loopiness resulting from over the counter cough meds.

Yum Yum, GIVE ME SOME!
Something about cooking and food lately has been leaving me feeling rather...
meh....
I'm not really into cooking which is surprising for me and as a result, I'm not really into eating. I have days of 'how little can I sustain on' because I'm just lazy, bored or just not in the mood to eat or cook. I think part of it is stress related too, as the work season of chaos ramps up.
So tonight, when I finally thought 'enough's enough, what can I eat' and I started to think that some peppered ham slices, a Babybel, glass of milk, banana and a yogurt chased by Doritos was a good idea, I opened up the cupboard to get out the Doritos and saw the new cereal I bought the other day.
And then it hit me.
Why have I never thought of having cereal for dinner before?!?!? After all, if it's part of the 'most important meal of the day' then there must be SOME nutritional value to it, non? Surely I can get away with having it for...DINNER!!!
So I had cereal with a banana in it (gotta keep the Chiquita plantation in business) with Doritos for dessert while I watched Hell's Kitchen.
Single has never tasted so good.

The passing of time
I'm not sure what it is about the turning of the seasons in fall that really make me remark on the passing of time. Perhaps it's the beginning of the school year that my current job reminds me with a stiff smack in the face each year during frosh week 'Welcome Week' (because apparently parents freak out over their precious little ones being initiated into university life with drinking and drugs and sex and all that is wrong in the world - ugh hello, walk into any suburban highschool and you'll see 10 times worse, you just have to look!). Maybe it's the quickly approaching birthday of mine (35 days peeps - and might I also take this moment to tell you it's only 109 until Xmas). Perhaps it's the change in the season that is much more marked than spring to summer.
I dunno.
And maybe it's that I had coffee with Mexican Princess today after helping her adjust her chandelier where we reflected on the changes she and I have both seen in our lives and I know I've had probably the best two years of my life. But it really hit me today on the ball field as I played my last softball game of the season. Almost 60 games later and somehow, 4 months have passed. And while I'm excited to be moving on to something new and focus a lot of time and effort on it (rowing), where did time go? What did I do with it? What do I have to show for it? And will I make the most of the next 4 months before Xmas that always seem to pass in a flurry of activity between work and play?
I know...it's a little...deep...for hanging up my cleats and glove for the season but it just struck a chord with me today. And so I thought I'd share it with you and fill up the cosmic void with my moment of...
Hmmm...
