Either I'm classless, it's late and I'm beyond tired making this űber funny OR it really *is* comical...

Thank you Lego, for making the World Cup bearable

Everywhere I go these days, it seems all people are talking about is the World Cup. Babes in orange dresses, status updates, uniforms that are dirty, Canadians breaking hearts, blah blah blah. Don't get me wrong, I find it kinda neat to drive around town and see flags hanging off of cars all over the place in our...well, conservative town...but frankly, I don't give a rat's ass about soccer.

However, if you get Lego involved then maybe, just maybe I'll wanna watch. J's to the E, this one's for you(s):

Something for the 'to see list'

My long ago colleague and favourite entrepreneur MChen has started a new project with her sister, Serena, to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. They do this as their father, for whom I heard many, many, many beyond belief entertaining stories about while M and I worked together (plus, M's a great story teller which only enhances the Papa Chen stories) was diagnosed with cancer.

To support him and raise money, the lassies are doing what they do best...being creative. They've started the D.A.D project. I'll let you go to the site and read up on it. I've bought shirts of M's and drawings of Serena's because the ladies are wickedly talented. So they're working on very reasonably priced prints of their daily drawings for sale.

I quite liked the one from M today about sloths...I love sloths.

But better yet, there was this video:

Meet the sloths from Amphibian Avenger on Vimeo.

LOVE IT. Especially the guy at 1:30. Reminds me of Zoot and Animal combined....you know, from the muppets. But really, have you ever seen a cuter animal scratching its ass?

Even Little Miss Naughty blushes

For Xmas, Gback gave me a new key chain he had bought while en route to Africa. Apparently I was the first that came to mind in Heathrow when he saw it with this on it:

Alright, I admit, it's not completely uncharacteristic of me (save for the purpleness of it) so I put my keys on it and called it a day. Sure, it makes me chuckle when I see it every day but well, isn't that part of its charm?

Today I had to go in for an oil change and to get my car looked at after my accident. The dealership called to let me know that the guy who does the estimates would actually not be available and that I could still come in for the oil change. When I hung up the phone, I mentioned to GBack that I would have to give them my keys on the ring. We had a giggle and then I didn't think much about it after that.

Fast forward a few hours and I arrived at the dealership and got to chatting with the guy who I had rebooked my appointment with. It was quite friendly and then as I handed over my keys, I know I must have blushed but neither of us said anything. However, upon me getting my keys back, and in front of the cashier no less, this same service manager decided to give me a little lecture on the weight of my keys.

Yes, the weight of my keys. Apparently, over time (like a decade), additional weight puts pressure on the ignition and then you can be driving along and BAM, your car stops working. Scary stuff. I think I must have looked like someone just shot me because he reassured me that it was something that takes years to happen. He pointed out that it's mostly the 'A' cube letter that weighs the most but when it's just that, the keys and Little Miss Naughty, you KNOW he looked at all of the items on that key ring.

I have to go back on Monday.

I'm still/already blushing.

Prepping for memory lane

I just posted about my upcoming trip home for my highschool reunion. Couldn't go home to a sweeter song. This one's for the TBay peeps...

Bad Romance (aka Bad Drag)

Some background music for this post...

Getting my am coffee today, I saw a poster for the campus GLBTQ pride week and beside that, a poster for a drag show at the campus bar.

'Scuse me? A drag show where I work? Well now that's interesting.

But do you think I could find anyone to go with me last minute? Of COURSE I could. My trusty 'date' CBeau.

It's rare that I feel like a minority in my life. But walking into the campus bar, I soon realized, besides perhaps the bar staff, that CBeau and I might just be the only two heterosexual people in the bar. And even more ironic, considering we went and left together, it could very well appear like we were actually on a date.

The show was a riot. Isis (pictured below) performed up a storm to Bad Romance and Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend. Even better (s)he posed for a pic for CBeau for my blog. (S)he was followed by 6 more queens and kings (there were some ladies dressed as men in there too - thanks Wikipedia for schooling me on proper cross dressing terminology) all hoping to be named, you guessed it, king and queen of pride week. We saw Bollywood 'dancers', men who passably looked like women (and ironically enough, a lot like my tenant), booty shaking, really bad barefoot grinding up against the mic stand, stilettos in size 12, and LOTS of dancing by the crowd. All I have to say is, I now know why the women of Sex and the City would go to gay clubs to dance. That and I can't wait for 80's night on Valentine's Day. I'm gonna be shakin' my money maker to Manic Monday while y'all are being 'romantic'. That's after my greedy 10 date afternoon. ;o)

Anyways, all this to say, it was a good Friday night of hoopla and shenanigans.

House Hippo

A few weeks ago, Big Oil and I were out with A & C and we got onto the discussion of House Hippo and some crazy commercial Big Oil had seen so I thought I'd share. Also, I'm using it as a tutorial for a fellow blogger to learn how to embed a video. (I feel like that's so dirty for some reason.)

I lied

A while back I put into my FB status update, much to all of your shock, that I was sick and tired of hearing Xmas music. Well, at least until March.

I lied.

But only because I saw this tonight:

Seriously, when I saw the car at 29 seconds in I actually had a little gasp of pleasure out loud with an 'awwww'. God, I'm a sucker for Xmas. But like you all didn't already know that. Dammit, I love you Google. I love you and your viral marketing campaigns. You warm my heart. You make my soul sing.

Oh, and here's another new Search Story. Seems like it's a much better out of office than I had earlier this month.

Being a responsible adult = feeding neuroses and becoming a hypcondriac

About 6 months ago, St. Clair, Gback and JJ all got on my case about the fact that I'd never been to the eye doctor. 31 years and never been. But why? I've never had problems seeing? They're not like teeth that need cleaning? WTF?

I do have a tendency to get styes in my eyes (ha ha, that rhymes - shut up, I'm tired and stressed and little things seem to be amusing me). I figure though it's my punishment for being a lazy ass and not washing off eye makeup so I deserve it. But right before Xmas I had one in a really weird position so I figured I should probably go make sure it wasn't a tumour or anything. It wasn't. In fact, it went away and I didn't even think twice about it until the am of my appointment.

So I went in for my appointment and looked at things and had air shot into my eye and then had one of the most detailed descriptions of my body I've ever had. And you know, the science geek in me asked lots of questions. Here's what I learned:

-I have rock star vision in my right eye. My left, not so much. Together, rock star because my right eye compensates for my left. In fact, I can't even read the last two charts on the eye exam thingy with my left eye only. I guess at the letters based on the general shape.

-The reason my left eye sucks is because it has a stigmatism and it's smaller than my right eye. Yes, apparently eyes come in different sizes, just like boobs. So it doesn't process light in the same way as my right one does but my right one basically says 'das ok, buddy, I got'chur back on this one'.

-However, my right eye also suffers from a weaker optical nerve. What this means is in the long run, because it's workin' double time, it's going to get weaker quicker than it should and I'll need help seeing sooner. Also, it means that I can start to lose vision in that eye, especially peripheral vision. So I had to do a crazy test to test for peripheral vision lost. Problem was, my left eye showed issues, not my right so I have to go back for more tests in a few weeks when my eyes 'aren't tired'.

-I also have abnormally small tear drainage ducts. This means, when I cry, that the little holes in the corner of my eye don't drain my tears into my sinuses fast enough so they pour down my face as opposed to pouring out my nose. Did you know that that's why your nose runs when you cry? Me neither. But I digress. This has become a problem in recent years in the winter because I'm either having an allergic reaction to the mold in the snow or the dryer, colder environment so when my eyes try to lubricate themselves, they go a little overboard (I'll tell you why in a minute) and then the tears spill down my face. So much so, that a few of you have asked me why I'm crying when we're out and about in the winter time. Good news? So far they're not so small that I need surgery but they're at greater risk of clogging. Great. Fucking awesome.

-Also, the reason I create too many tears is because, now this I didn't know, your eyes have oil glands near your bottom lashes that produce an oil so your tears stick to your eyes better and lubricate them. Because some of my glands are clogged and also 'petite', I don't produce enough oil so when my eyes are trying to lubricate themselves, the tears aren't sticking and then my tear valves go into hyperdrive and tear and tear and tear and then my ducts can't drain them properly and then, literally, walking from my house to my car in the driveway can mean me 'crying' uncontrollably for over an hour and a half. I now have 'oily drops' to put in my eyes when they tear like that. Seems counter-intuitive but fuck, what do I know? Not much about eyes, apparently.

So next week I go back for another peripheral vision test. Awesome. And more lectures on the fact that I need to take my makeup off at night before bed. And stern lectures on not to put eye liner on the rim of my bottom eyelid because that could clog my oil glands as well. I gave her one of these looks (see left) and said 'ugh, and it's TACK-Y!' She chuckled and said 'well, I didn't want to say it but, yeah, it is'. I think health care professionals like my bluntness some days, especially when I'm the first client of the day as I usually tend to be.

And that's the story of my eyes. Riveting, isn't it?

I'm now a narcissist. In red.

Is it totally narcissistic that I'm really liking the photos of me that have been taken lately? I never really thought of myself as photogenic but lately, a lot of the pics that have come up seem to have been indicating otherwise.

To get deep about it, I think it's the 'really-happy-with-life, genuine smile' that I seem to got goin' on. I've also noticed I belly laugh more. I am a lot less angry about things. Sure I have my short-fused moments (thanks Dad, for passing on that personality trait) still but fundamentally, I'm pretty frickin' happy. And I 'stop and smell the roses' and appreciate life more too. Poor Haileybird was the victim of that today (btw, welcome to the blog, Haileybird!) when she said that she hated the fact that it was a grey dreary day out again today to which I responded along the lines of 'yes but it's winter and it's supposed to be like that and without grey days, then we wouldn't appreciate the sunny ones.' Gback retorted with one of my favourite lines: 'I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.' And is it because I'm Canadian that I feel weird saying that I think I've got it good and I'm happy with my lot in life? Like I'm gloating or something? Whatever. I don't care.

I've also noticed that I have a lot more red clothing. Like I mean a LOT more. I had one pair of red fleece pants and one red long sleeved t and somehow, in the last two years, I seem to have a lot more colour in my life - especially red. Like enough that I can do a full load of clothing of just REDS. Again, I chalk it up to the changes I've seen in life these last two years. Those are my deep thoughts. And these are my fav pics of me of the last little while. I'd say 'enjoy' but that feels REALLY narcissistic.

Dear Jet Blue...I love you

Yeah, I know. Not typical that you see me LOVING a company but frickin' frack, these gents run a good business.

The situation went something like this. We flew from Syracuse to NYC (JFK) and then back. While on our trip back, we were delayed by almost 2 hours because the aircraft coming in to take us to Syracuse was delayed. And THEN there was a backlog of about 10-15 other planes on the tarmac waiting to take off. Egads. But we didn't really mind. After all, we've all travelled with Air Canada before and we know what kinda fiasco that can be. And we're Canadians - we get that Ma Nature can be a spiteful bitch. And when those two don't suffice, we also had a bootlegged copy of New Moon from Canal Street that we were watching in the airport. So we really didn't care.

But then CBeau got this from Jet Blue....

I know it's $25 but hot damn, have you ever heard of any Canadian airlines (*ahem* Air Canada) doing something like this? Sure they gave me compensation for being BOOTED OFF THEIR FLIGHT FOR WHICH I HAD A TICKET 4 MONTHS IN ADVANCE but this was a delay...these things happen.

So I was impressed. And what do I do when I'm impressed - I let someone know. So I got on the Jet Blue website and fired this little note off to them.

Dear Jet Blue,

Not being an American citizen, flying with your airline was a first to me on my recent trip to New York City.

Two friends and I decided to drive the 3 hours to Syracuse and then fly in to JFK as it would cut down travel and headache time if weather was inclement. Being Canadians, we understand this happens often.

Upon our return, the aircraft taking us from JFK to Syracuse was delayed and we experienced a further delay on the tarmac waiting to take off. In total, we were probably 1.3-2 hours behind sche
dule. However, being Canadians and having travelled with our own Canadian airlines frequently, we understand that this can be par for the course, especially during the holiday season.

What has bowled me over and caused m
e to write you a complimentary note with two thumbs up is the fact that you sent us a voucher for $25 as a way to compensate us for this inconvenience - one that is by far nowhere near what we've experienced with other (Canadian) airlines.

Given our flight was enjoyable beyond that with easy check in and luggage pick ups upon arrival at our two destinations, you can be guaranteed that I will now consider driving to the nearest airport serviced by Jet Blue and fly within the US from that location.

Thank you for the great service and appreciation for my time when the flight was delayed.

Best regards,

Lynn

p.s. On a completely unrelated note, I loved looking at your aircraft in the airports - fabulous and unique paint jobs.

Now, if you've never seen a Jet Blue aircraft, they're all different. Okay, they probably have like 10 designs but it felt like every one was different. See what I mean? I love, love, LOVE the argyle. Ahhh...argyle... And polka dots? CRACK. ME. UP.

A giant, plush....*whoops*

I came to a harsh, teary-eyed realization this am: my beloved feline friend, Spencer, will not always be with me.

While lying in bed this am with her snuggling oh so close to me for warmth, I took a few minutes to have a harsh reflection on her behaviour over the last few months and have started to see that she really is aging now. I've had a stool by the bed for her for the last 4 years but moving to the house made a huge difference in her as she was now forced to navigate 3 floors to get from snuggles in bed to food to litter box. She was a new cat.

But she's started to turn white around the muzzle. She's losing quite a bit of body mass. She moves much slower. She's much more needy. She snuggles up very close for body heat and readjusts when I roll over at night where she used to hiss, meow in complaint and move on for the rest of the night. She also grunts and groans and sleeps very soundly (probably a by-product of hearing starting to go). And she snores. LOUDLY. All things that are showing her age - a whopping 16 this past November 7th.

So today I decided to buy her a cat bed or two where she could curl up and have lots of padding. Like old people, the more padding around her tired bones these days, the better. Seems my lap's workin' out JUST fine for her ( ;o) ) but it's not always open for business. I went and got a traditional cat bed that is large enough for both cats to curl up in and then a second cat sack for her to curl up in.

She seems rather leery of it and just now, I realized why...it looks like a giant, plush condom. See what I mean? In the words of Gback 'Oye Vey'.

Hot damn, Google, you know how to do me right

On a further note to the stuff that really amuses me, Google's at it again with their Search Stories videos on Youtube. This one is the best:

If you liked that, you'll enjoy, but probably won't like as much:

Potholes

Highschool

Parisian Love

Mad to Live

Newbie

There are few things

I'm not sure if I was never really one to get swept off my feet at grand gestures of presents or whatnot or if that's a new position since becoming an adult. Perhaps it's tied to the fact that we didn't have a lot of money growing up as kids and while I never really felt any hardship, I don't feel I missed out on anything because of some of the memories I have growing up. While money was tight, time spent as a family or with my brother wasn't and well, perhaps that's why I could care less what name my heel is walking over each day or the brand of car I drive (although don't get me started on Fords).

So when I do actually see something I like and want, I have very little impulse control not to buy it but I figure that as it happens less often than most, I can be forgiven.

When I moved into my house, my first Christmas was rounding the bend at this time of year. Amazing that I've been here now for almost two and a half years and amazing more than I've been here longer on my own (sans the med student) than I was with le ex. But I digress...it was at this time that the neighbour at the other 'corner' of our street put up star lights that hung as a curtain in their dining room window. Because they were on the corner where the two streets intersected, every time I went north on my street, I'd see the lights. I was enchanted.

I'm not sure what it is about stars and twinkle lights. I've wanted nothing more than to have twinkle lights in my back yard and then to see stars I could have in my house, well, I was sold. I remember begging le ex to try and find them, convinced they were an Ikea product, and to get them when we did one day stumble upon them. But he saw them as unsightly and expensive. I resigned myself to trying to think that they were tacky so I wouldn't want them as much.

Fast forward almost two years and not wanting to let the Ikea gods get the better of me, I was in the Toronto Ikea on a mission when I came across them once more. This time, without hesitation, I bought them. And as my street seems to be getting more and more like the Griswalds every year (WTF? Even *I*, lover of all things Christmas, have a limit and some neighbours reached it several strings of lights ago), I will turn on my simple lights and bask in the oddly greeny-cream glow.

Maybe it's because I am a little dating checked out

I've decided to check out of the dating game for a little while. I'm too busy with work, being sick (still have this damn cold 4 weeks later), house stuff and well, just life things. It's a HUGE time demand and I'm just bored with it. Plus, and I still have to blog about them, I've had a few more dates since I last posted and I'm just done with craptacular dates. Last thing I need is to be bitter and jaded and if I keep going with the dating scene right now, I'm headed right down Bitter and Jaded Lane and will be cruising along at a nice speed.

So, this video cracked me up today:

I also put on a CD at work today and chair danced to this song by Macy Gray. Something about it is speaking to me these days because it seems there are a few disappearing gents who are playing the dreaded mind games with a few single gal pals which again, just listening to, puts me on the road towards Bitter and Jaded Lane. I love the lyrics (see below) because they seem soooo true. Definitely a 'he's just not that into you song'.

Why didn't you call me?

We went out one night
Everything went right
We got something started
It was outta sight
We had such a good time
Hey! Why didn't you call me?
I thought I'd see you again

By the phone I wait
Staring into space
Thinking about our first kiss
Out on our first date
We had such a good time
Hey! Why didn't you call me?
I thought I'd see you again

Why don't you call me again?
And I'm gonna ask
When I see you again
Thought you would be my man, my lover, my friend
I never thought it would end so quickly
It would end

I've resorted to
Hanging up on you
I know you know it's me
How else will I talk to you
We had such a good time
Hey! Why didn't you call me?
I thought I'd see you again

Why don't you call me again?
And I'm gonna ask
When I see you again
Thought you would be my man my lover my friend
I never thought it would end so quickly
We had such a good time
Hey! Why didn't you call me?
I thought I'd see you
I thought I'd see you
I thought I'd see you again

WHMPC - The Hopeless Romantic

So, I'm at home sick with a nasty cold. I keep checking my temperature for a fever and I think the thermometer is lying. Regardless, the thought of getting up and showering and getting dressed even was too much, forget walking across the parking lot to my office.

So here I sit. Sick. Lonely. And weepy. Because that's how I am when I'm sick. I'm a cry-y, weepy, needy, love-wanting sap. And what better thing to do when you can't sleep any more and are waiting for the soup to cook? Blog! ;o)

Before I post some more WHMPC because, even though I swore off men recently, I've been out dating still and have to catch you all up on the trials and tribulations, I need to post this.

This speaks to the hopeless romantic in me, not a guy who's earned that as his nickname. And as I'm sure that there will be times where I will definitely waste some hair and makeup products as a result of that side of my personality, this morning, with kleenex in hand, it made me feel 10 times better than any loopiness resulting from over the counter cough meds.

Good GOD that's tacky

Okay, so most of you know that I hate, hate, HATE those stupid ribbon magnets that people put on their car for supporting troops, breast cancer, whatever. Not sure what it is about it but I hate them as much as I hate those bracelets that everyone was into a few years ago because of Lance Armstrong and then it took off to every cause - or profit making organization - got into having a coloured bracelet. I guess it's that whole affiliation issue I have...

ANYWAYS, I've seen a max of like 2-3 of these magnets on cars and am driven batty by them and one day just wanna go on a stealing rampage in a Walmart parking lot and then decorate one car with all of them (I won't mention *whose* car I'd like to do that to ;o) ). So when I pulled up behind this truck on the Bronson off ramp at Hunt Club, I thought I'd hit the mecca for that prank...and had to take a pic. God I love my phone...
